The Cloud Mindset

We all know that with technology and the internet of things (IoT) changing and improving at a rapid speed, the need for platform evolution and application modernisation increases. This, in turn, drives cloud adoption for many companies around the world.

The reality is that the future is digital, and for companies to keep their competitive edge it is imperative to digitally transform. That digital future is NOW and being able to adapt flexibly is key. Looking at the South African market, for many companies, moving to the Cloud is the THING right now or at least the next big project.

However, many companies still struggle with it as the approach to software development needs to change. The problem is usually where to start. Like with cloud infrastructure, the billing structures for the different cloud services are not fully understood and intern companies run a high cloud cost and miss some of the benefits and advantages of running in the cloud. Over time, these costs become a struggle to manage.

When running in the cloud, regardless of the cloud provider, it is important to understand the use case because it is a key driver for where you could potentially land up in terms of cost. For example, if you understand what type of processing is required and for how long, you can choose the appropriate service that can potentially be scheduled or automated for the time it’s required and terminated once workloads have been completed so you don’t pay for idle resources.

Like with everything in life, change is essential and thinking patterns need to change when running or migrating to the cloud. The generation of engineers that are born in the cloud behave and operate differently to those with an on-premise approach/background to infrastructure. They scale with the key differentiator being leveraging cloud-native technology. Thus the need to re-think how to develop, how to deploy and how to operate becomes imperative.

With that being said, the answer is not the technology but the “people”. Those with a sound cloud strategy and a mindset that will leverage AIOps to automate much of IT operations. They will remove DevOps bottlenecks to enable companies to have a competitive advantage in a cloud-native world.

The future has arrived.
